Was it just the done thing for German cultural figures to never actually be in Germany, or were you in California because Berlin way scary and you knew it? Why does the book always discover the person being out of the country at the time like a big surprise? It turns out there was ONLY Thomas Mann to get harassed for all of ten minuites before he casusally decided to "Visit France... and, um, never come back." Book, you engenue you.
