Free Music, or Treasures of the Iowa City Public Library:
1.Lawrence of Arabia score by Maurice Jarre
Why I needed it: Jarre's possibly my favorite film composer. The score is bombastic and elegant- v. hard to be, v. appropriate to the biopic's focus character.
2.Dig Me Out- Sleater-Kinney
Why I needed it: Love the band, not familiar with this album at all.
3.All Hands On The Bad One- Sleater-Kinney
Why I needed it: The Bad One? Ballad of a Ladyman? Come on, this is like, their strongest stuff.
4.Lilith Fair New Music Sampler
Why I needed it: Because I am a lesbian.
5.Ani Difranco: Puddle Dive
Why I needed it: Like All Hands On The Bad One, I already have most of the tracks... but now I have them ALL! And neatly organized onto an album! Is it not spiffy?
6.My Fair Lady- Original Broadway Cast Recording
Why I needed it: Because I am a gay man.
7.Victor Victoria- Original Broadway Cast Recording
Why I needed it: I... okay, just shush.
8.Ani Difranco: Out of Range
Why I needed it: Second verse, same as the first. See 5.
9.Amadeus: The Director's Cut
Why I needed it: Because this movie is AWESOME! Just AWESOME!
10.Aida: Original Broadway Cast Recording
Why I needed it: Egypt+Elton John=love
11.The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert
Why I needed it: Hehehehehehehe. Oh, this movie. If you've ever seen it, you wouldn't need to ask. You'd just shake your head at me, like you're doing right now.
12.Jekyll and Hyde The Musical Original Broadway Cast Recording
Why I needed it: This was great when I saw it in NY.
13.Blues Brother's Soundtrack
Why I needed it: How could I not need this? Who doesn't love this movie?
14.X-files Soundtrack
Why I needed it: I can't find my copy anywhere, and I miss Bjork's version of Hunter on this and Sarah McLachlan's version of Black. Oh, and X's Crystal Ship cover. And The Cardigan's Deuce is the world's best breakup song. Seriously, I defy you to find a better one.
15.Madonna's Ray of Light
Why I needed it: Still a gay man. A gay man who can't find her copy of this right now. Sing it: Young velvet porcelain boy/Devour me when you're with me/Speak delicious fires!
16.Lilith Fair (original double disk)
Why I needed it: To summon the fine bitches to E119. Come, fine bitches, for the lesbian action you seek it within...
17.The Beatles- Rubber Soul
Why I needed it: Because I can?
18.Cake- Comfort Eagle
Why I needed it: Cake is such a generally solid band. Why wouldn't anyone need another slice of cake?
19.Evita Premiere American Recording
Why I needed it: Possibly, just possibly, mind you, my favorite musical of all time. Nothing beats You Must Love Me.
20.Giselle- Orchestra of the Royal Opera House
Why I needed it: A truly awesome ballet I really wish I were able to see. I'm super curious about the accompanying music.
21. Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat: New Production
Why I needed it: I loved this production live, it was really fun. Go go go Joseph! Indeed.
22.The King and I: version w/ Julie Andrews and Ben Kingsley
Why I needed it: Um, have you looked at the casting of power above? And I like this musical. I like Rogers and Hammerstein. Maybe it's just nostalgia, because my grandmother well and thoroughly indoctrinated me as a child, but I don't understand people's huge issues with it. Is it somewhat racist? Yes. Is the source material from a book written in 1862, and the actual musical from 1951? Yes. It's a production of its time, and I don't see people completely invalidating Merchant of Venice for Shylock.
23. Indigo Girls: Swamp Ophelia
Why I needed it: Eh, haven't heard much off it, but I really like them, so how far wrong can I go?
24.Indigo Girls: Nomads, Indians, Saints
Why I needed it: Hammer and a Nail, and I generally like them.
25.Caroline, or Change
Why I needed it: This is the crowning glory of my day. I loved the book for this. I can't wait to listen to it. I am kind of giggling-euphoric that they had it.
Shout out to Louis for randomly having Baez's greatest hits album and lending it to me to burn.
