--made giant spreadsheet for Eastercon panel: I combed about 11 blogs/data aggregation sources like goodreads and amazon and came up with a super-list of eligible candidates. I've gone through it eliminating duplicates, weeding out the non-fantasy (people's lists are, for understandable reasons, very commingled with sci-fi, and it can be difficult to determine what one's looking at from a short description), checking that things were indeed published in 2011 and, for some definition of the term, published in the UK (I labeled for British Authors and British Imprints). This took HOURS.

--went through and made a note on my epic chart of anything that's a sequel to something, in case we decide to fuck sequels/series, and read a bit of the prose to determine whether it's even like, basically fucking competent: down to 17 competent prose choices, only 8 of which are not sequels. Going to push for Non-Sequels/Series, which I think is v. in the spirit of the prize, as well as a solid practical choice.
I cannot read these 5 books and their 15 collective predecessors, I can't judge #17 of a series well based off only having read it in isolation, and our awarding #17 won't really accomplish the desired critical and practical boost to English fantasy publishing, because if you were going to go pick up this book post-award, you'd probably be put off by the previous 16 and/or have read this long-running series already if you had much intention of doing so.
Of the 8, I can certainly ferret it down to 5 (this whole thing again took a few hours).
