ASIAN HISTORY HALP

x_losSo for something I'm writing, I need a Historical Character somewhat along the lines of Uncle Iroh from Avatar--an Old General, caught up in internecine warfare, who's lost his family and is tired of fighting. Could be anyone vaguely answering to that description, but I'd prefer someone with like, a real chance at Power (so the renunciation of it can mean something).
I could give you equivalent European figures, but I am so done with making my history all about whitey (and a bit with Who's historical fixation with whitey, but that is another story). Aand I'm not going to M. Knight Shamalan it and take this Asian inspiration!character and White Him Up.
Anyone know a good place to start researching?
