Found my smegging phone. The trouble with hiking backpacks is that they have so many pockets. The trouble with tribbles is that they're born pregnant. Coincidence?!

Southland Tales was such an abomination. And I mean that. Midgets? Cheri Oteri the Badass Revolutionary? "Pimps don't commit suicide" as a leitmotif? Wiki Southland Tales if you've yet hear about its terrible majesty. It was bad in such a way that Danny and I were silent throughout, and then the instant the credits rolled I collapsed onto the floor in hysterical laughter. Not joking, I rolled on the dirty underbelly of a Detroit movie palace with no regard for the state of my (frankly bitchin') camel hair coat with butter cream silk lining-- it was a pure visceral reaction to evil.

Occasionally in writer's workshops, a story isn't bad, it's simply NOT a story. There's no order to the sequence of events, nothing like characterization-- it's something, but not a story. This was worse than that. It made nothing even approaching sense. It's the un-movie. Every time you watch it a good movie is unwoven from the fabric of existence. Danny and I personally destroyed Brazil and Robin Hood Men In Tights last night. We're sorry. We're so sorry.

The acting is simply bizarre. A pitch-perfect Mandy Moore (Why is she good, again? Is that justice, world? To give a semi-profitable pop-star actual acting skill? And have her not be Billie Piper?) de-evolves into a soupy character goo as the script systematically eradicates her motivation and consistency, the better to service amorphous plot forces she clearly, and quite rightly, doesn't understand. A few other people deliver as well as they can under the circumstances, including a surprisingly good Rock, but that may just be because the role doesn't require him to make any huge leaps.

That said it's shot like a dream. The music sequence is fun. The rendition of Star Spangled Banner is the best/most innovative I've ever heard. The visuals are creative, organic, cool. The concepts are occasionally quite interesting.

It's utter crap, though.
