The problem with polymer particles isn't exclusive to Trash Island. Samples that have been taken around the world show various concentrations of plastic slurry throughout.

He mentioned Dr. Vom Saal! <3<3<3 I haven't taken any of his classes, but he was a guest lecturer in a bio class I took last year where he explained his research on BPA. The statistics he gave on diabetes, obesity, and cancer rates in mice given BPA are fucking scary. He's gotten a lot of flack for his research, mostly along the lines of: "but plastics make it possible! Our lives depend on plastic, so STFU already", and "this was tested on mice. Am I a mouse? NO. So you don't know what you're talking about." :/ Never mind that fact that other things that have been shown to cause cancer/disease in lab animals have proven harmful to humans. Our bodies function the same was as other mammals so of course we will experience the same effect. Endocrine disruption does not to discriminate based on species.
But at least I've been hearing more and more about BPA and Dr Vom Saal's research as of late. Now I'm just waiting for the word to get out on pesticides like Atrazine, which are also just a few broken ester bonds away from being estrogen.

Trying to restrain myself from writing a huge rant here. If you want to hear more about all this AWESOME SHIT, let me know. I rant even better in person!

God, I imagine it's esp. problematic given the whole 'upwelling currents crossover with rich nutrient grounds important in fish we eats lifecycle' issue as well. Eugh.

"but plastics make it possible! Our lives depend on plastic, so STFU already",

Wow. woooow. HATE. *cough* I wonder if there's any current research on plastics that perform the same but are functionally biodegradable? :(

I WANT TO KNOW IN PERSON YES. WE MUST GATHER AND TALK AND CRY AND WATCH SHIT TO BE LESS DEPRESSED ABOUT IT.
