So here's why work was foul tonight, culled from an AIM b/c I'm too disgusted to type it twice: OH MY SODDING CHRIST: I ACTUALLY GOT 'BUT OBAMA'S BLACK' TONIGHT. FOR REAL REAL. From DEMOCRATS. Hillary Supporters. Just--just SAID like it was a rational thing to SAY. Like it was 1956 or something! And I don't think they were joking at all! I had nooooo fucking idea what to say that wasn't "I can see your address on this screen. You live what, 2 hrs away? I'm coming to punch you. Be ready. 2 Hours, bitch." (note: I did not say that. I DID say "/Really?/" Incredulously, and they were like, actually assuring me "Oh yeah" and I was like "...I'm a little grossed out now. Goodnight."--granted, not what I should have done, not PC enough, but gaaaawd.)

The other day I got 'Barack is the vanguard of the Islam (error preserved from original) conspiracy to take over this country, and if you can't see that, you're BLIND. OPEN YOUR EYES!'
I was like "He's been attending the same Christian Baptist church for 20some years. If he's Islamic, he doesn't know that?" And then he went on and I had to hang up b/c I was laughing too hard to be polite.

Possible better responses in future: "No no, Obama's only HALF Black. Yeah. Is that better? And you're only half a dumbfuck."

"No, see, Obama's an Oreo, sir. His skin may be black, but his soul is white as snow. And his Ivy League education in some ways entitles him to more of the traditional prerogatives of white privilege than you're privy to, sir. In fact, Obama's whiter than you. Yeah. Think deep on that one. Then go lynch yourself."

"He IS?! OH MY GOD!! I--I *begin to cry, jaggedly, moaning 'no, noooo,' hang up*"

Howl's Moving Skyscraper

Disapproving Rabbits

I saw a really good documentary on the Mosuo tribe once and remembered it/them tonight in a [community profile] best_enemies discussion about ethology (yeah, I /love/ that group's random tangents, sry).

xkcd had a great comic making fun of this commercial, which I adore.

I have a feeling that the moving skyscraper would be really loud and I would be a little angry at the jackass that decides to shift his apartment at 3am.

It would also make it harder to push someone out a window and have them fall to their deaths, as there's a decent chance that someone's roof will be right there and ruin all your well laid plans...

ah... it's making fun of a commercial i haven't seen. that would be why i really have no idea what's going on in today's xkcd.

I almost sent the Intervention to the kids... I may still send it to #1-Son. He's 17. If a little sheltered.

My younger sister, who used to keep rescue rabbits until she moved to Dallas, needs the Rabbit site.

And I thought my daughter was gonna laugh until she upchucked at xkcd. She adores that commercial. I adore xkcd, full stop. The whole family does. Nous sommes des geeks.

As for the morons on the phone: "You knew the job was dangerous when you took it, Fred."

That has to become my new mantra.

Yeah, and we call nationally? And these were in St. Louis, which is in my home state? Close to home = Extra-gross. Looking back I'm trying to tell myself that they were kidding and it was just really deadpan? But I think that may be my brain trying to rationalize it and they may well have been Really Not Kidding.

Oh, good point, how could it not be loud? And imagine the huge rows over X having moved in a position that you want/which blocks the sun/etc and refusing to move his box!

But then additionally, someone could get squished to death in a horrible 'moving-box' accident/malfunction?

Yeah, they might not have aired it everywhere--esp. not in the Land Of Bewilderingly Few Channels. But there was a link to the original commercial at the top of the page! Just not v. well-displayed.

Also I just have [livejournal.com profile] gritsinmisery explain the programing ones of xkcd to me, b/c she, y'know, gets computers and I don't.

Yech. It does make punching more feasible? > > (I try to be a pacifist, I really do, but sometimes it's hard.)

We should believe that anyway. For the sake of kittens and blood pressure.

Y'know how pain is biologically associated with memory? Like, how dubbing a knight in medieval times actually involved clobbering the hell out of them with the sword and often lightly concussing them so that they would remember their oath? A part of me was like "If I punched you, you would physically have to remember to associate stupid with pain, and that might do you long-term good."

But that's, er, not exactly satyagraha.

Wait, how'd your littles get sheltered with you as a mom, again?

Huh, like, from shelters or rabbits injured in the wild, or?

Oh man, they were from St. Louis, too: feel proud.

We could always try other senses. Instead of feeling something horrible, smelling or hearing or seeing.

For the good of all, of course.

Yeah, me too as a kid, but I'm impressed by the world-building aesthetic? And it's firm, solid direction out of Kubrick that doesn't waffle on into self-indulgence, which is like, rare on the level of finding Koschei's death (er, the folktale, not in Who, in which he dies all the damn time). The book was kinda traumatizing as well, but interesting language-play? All written in that confused Anglo-Russian hyper-slangy polyglot.

It's a brilliant, beautiful movie, definitely - which, well, was why it was traumatising. Wouldn't have left such an impact, otherwise. I really should watch it again. ...Still haven't read the book, which I also should do. (Heh. I still believe that the Master started that whole myth by regenerating in front of a bunch of people.)

Daughter's not so sheltered. Not with me as a mum. She's my Whovian, and bitches that I won't let her watch Torchwood. Guess I could obtain the pre-watershed versions for her... but she does occasionally have nightmares about movies / telly.

#1-Son lives with blinders on sometimes. It's not that he doesn't know these things happen (he's the one that complains about people who ship manga / anime / RP characters who've never ever MET) but he prefers to ignore them.

Both have inherited an easily-embarrassed psyche from their paternal grandmother. Occasionally, just to annoy the hell out of #1, I say "boobicles." You should see his face...

Oh, "rescued" rabbits = "from shelters". They were bred, not feral, and given up when they weren't little and cute any more. She had one (named "Frog" -- go fig) that would take out her huge ginger tom cat. Big bunnies are BIG.

Oy, you found white Democrats in St. Louis? And they were bigots? Generally, the only white Democrats around here are associated w/ some university, or the fine arts, or suchlike. Not the kind to care about race. The old-tyme Democrats, working class / union types, have all gone Republican a long time ago. Senator Gasbag Bond is their patron saint.

But... I guess I'm not surprised.
