Yeah it’s like, even being told ‘this can’t be your primary career’ is doable, but then it has to make sense as a sideline, even. It has to not be a flatly masturbatory use of your time. If you ARE going to be super rise&grind!! and are competent, that has to *do something*.
How much better though to be quietly involved in a community than like—idk an agent of this big active turn to extractive gig economics fandom is half attempting, ‘oh commission me pennies on the hour to write you incredibly mediocre fic, I don’t know how to exist without monetising it!!’
And it’s gotten so much more difficult TO be involved in community as such since lj death, the mechanisms of enfolding and knowing people and seeing their situations and drawing them in at varying levels have gotten so atrophied; I can see why it’s off putting to throw a comment into the mailbox of someone you don’t know as a person at all, when the etiquette is now so confused as to how you even talk to each other, all overlapping systems.
