In a mood as bristly, unreasonable and unforgiving as my mother. Not for any good reason, just my body declaring that it's Hammer/Hormone time. What do I like to do instead of biting people's heads off and sucking out the delicious juices inside? Listen to music from the late 1920s, apparently. Like many a lemming arcing elegantly off the cliff, I only know who Annette Hanshaw is because of the heavy use made of her work in Sita Sings the Blues. But if you've not seen it, or if you have and dug her funky musical stylings enough to wish to repeat the aural experience, below are some of my favorite songs from the film.

As I was telling Katy earlier (whose eyes glaze over like frosted glass windows when I natter incessantly on about music, which she, despite her incredible proficiency as a singer and pianist, and in the face of her deep knowledge of musicals, appreciates in a more general sense about as much as lumberjacks do ikebana, to the point of being able to listen to entire Avril Lavigne albums in succession without pain), though I find it embarrassing, I typically have a hard time listening to older pop music. I get annoyed by the pacing not being quite fast enough, or a base line that is, by modern standards, flaccid. But I /really/ like Annette Hanshaw. The beat is thoroughly pleasant and engaging without being at all modern. And the cute little sing-songy 'that's all!' she ends every song with? Adorable.

Great jazz singer. A kind of happy voice. There were others who had voices more suited to the blues than she did, but she was really good.

Yeah, unusual for jazz? I think that might actually /add/ to the poignancy/charm.
