Notes on "Anne of the Island"
Mar. 30th, 2022 11:17 pm- Interesting geographic note: Anne thinks she lives in America. I’d not heard a Canadian put it that way before.
- ‘Did anybody ever think about billy andrews?’ No he’s just not the kind of person you think about
- Oh my god what did the Sloanes DO that everyone is like oh you know————- sloanes
- Oh no there is a chapter called “he just kept coming and coming”. Most unfortunate.
- Phil: if you don’t take me as a flatmate I promise to die, then vengefully haunt you. Make it easy on yourselves bc dead or alive I’m coming
- Everyone in these books is obsessed with a magazine called The Canadian Woman, which sounds like a joke about Canada, but isn't
- Every relationship in this book is the most lesbian thing since the last. But nothing ever concretely lesbians: it’s all heavy atmospheric lesbianism.
- Ruby’s death hit hard ngl
- Omg this millionaire sees the quilt Rachel gave anne hanging out in the garden and wants one bc his mom used to make quilts just like that, and gets it, and his fashionable wife fucking HATES it? Sir dump her. This hand made tulip quilt is prettier than she is and warmer on the bed.
His mom made quilts like that! Even if you don’t like it you have to shut up!!
I just don’t think THE Rachel Lynd made a bad quilt

- Huh, Marilla must be a little German bc she’s referencing the Frau Holla myth re snow being an old woman shaking the bedding out (Mari says it was big in Greece too)

- ‘You are the bride of my dreams, Diana, and I am your bridesmaid’ everything in this novel is lesbian. Nothing in this novel is lesbian.
- It’s like 1890 and Anne has been paid $10 by a magazine for a poem and honestly she wouldn’t get more than that today
- This side character is named William Obadiah Seemen and to that I say: absolutely not, no.
- Finished Anne of the Island, taking off one Goodreads star for animal murders
