Just finished hand-drawing massive map of former Soviet Republics, including major cities and all place names in English and their language of origin (Except my browser doesn't support Armenian or Georgian, frustratingly! How does one goad one's firefox into recognizing languages?). Hands. So. Crampy.
I wanted to go over all the lines in different colored markers and possibly use these gold glitter flakes to hi-light the urban centers, and maybe use a light water-color to differentiate the countries (All my knowledge of map-making comes form the opening of Lawrence of Arabia, but what he was doing looked quite pretty!), but I'm afraid of messing up all my careful line work: I had to grid a smaller picture out and transfer the grid scale to poster-board and copy square by square to get the scale on everything just right.
Granted, she did only ask for a map, no specifics on anything beyond 'shows all former USSR countries,' certainly nothing about getting all the islands right, and nothing like 'note cities, with dates of when they were the capitals, and use pluralistic notation.'
Yes, my rabid perfectionism does creep me out too, thanks for asking.
I'm kind of annoyed that the Soviet History 1945-1991 professor assigned this big map project b/c it's kind of unfair to people like me who aren't good artists. And it feels a little like busy work. But it DID help me get a feel for the area, and, despite taking forever, it was a bit fun. I asked for an extension b/c, while it was due last week, the shoulder and back injury and the concussion prevented me from bending over and drawing ad infinitum. They had better give it to me. I spent HOURS on this bitch.
