Noh-tes for Class
Sep. 10th, 2005 06:12 pmReading Anne Carson's Plainwater, the essay Kinds of Water, for my Travelogue class with John D'Agata (isn't it cool he came back to teach classes? And an undergrad one, no less! He's such a fine essayist).
line:
Well, a pilgrim is like a No play. Each one has the same structure, a question mark.
Leading me to look up more on Noh, because I had only a vauge idea of what it was.
Wikipedia:
"1st Category: God plays
2nd Category: Warrior plays
3rd Category: Woman plays
4th Category: Mad woman plays.
5th Category: Demon plays. "
And kind of prototypical-cheesy-feminist-me to notice, but:
"The Noh masks are used to portray a female or nonhuman (divine, demonic or animal) character."
Also: The Noh Mask Effect: A Facial Expression Illusion (interesting article on the ability of Noh masks to change expression depending on the light!)

God this is cool. Want to learn more at some point.
