Birthright can give me a free trip! In December. As their wait-list is sitting pretty at 17,000.

Never without an alternate plan, two separate people/family members have offered to pay my way, so:

What is the absolute cheapest way to fly from America to Europe? (And I mean CHEAPEST. I will fly a cardboard box with a propeller attached and 89 other people with layovers in hell and Laguardia) I think once there I can Ryan-Air it over to Istanbul and take the train down?

People who have more knowledge: where does a girl go to get cheeeeeap overseas flights, if the exact day is not particularly important to her and she can leave from MO or anywhere on the East Coast?

I was really gunning for Heathrow and booking a separate Ryan Air (eugh, or even Berlin Air a-fucking-gin for like, a few days after that), but if flying into Heathrow is a Deathly Travel Mistake as far as the moniez, tell me so--I'm not Tegan, I can bear rerouting. Well. It would be awful, but I wouldn't yell at Peter Davison about it.

Don't know if this is still the case, but a few years ago someone told me that Iceland Air is a comparatively cheap way to get to Europe. You may end up with a stopover in Reykjavik, but I understand it's not a bad place to spend some time.

Don't know about flying from the US to England, but from here Ryanair is no longer that cheap - if you add in baggage costs/taxes/everything else under the sun they charge you for...

As someone who flies the reverse direction a lot, I suggest checking out travelocity.com's flexible dates option. That'll give you a grid of all possible arriving/leaving combinations with the cheapest prices for each listed.

And actually I've had a small urge to hit Reykjavik up for its fine-ass hotsprings since my old roommate went and I didn't get to. :)

I feel you on the baggage, but as I travel with one backpackers pack for months, I'm not sure I can be hustled that hard? And really, Ryanair is STILL so much cheaper than the US alternatives that it seems as a mystical dream. x_x Oh subsidized airline industry, how I yen for thee.
