...and Claudius was played by Derek Jacobi once, so really, it's The Circle of Life at work here...
In the song "Be Prepared" in the Lion King, Scar tells his hyena henchmen that 'my words are a matter of pride.' We're all down with Lion King being an adaptation of Hamlet, right? Like, I don't have to sell anyone on that?* The ego-pride/lion-pride pun here mirrors Hamlet's bawdy line to Ophelia, 'did you think I meant country matters?' It's actually BRILLIANT. The similarity for me hinged on the double meaning consisting of personally satisfying/political, and the word 'matters,' despite the different in speakers: Scar/Claudius in one, Simba/Hamlet in the other.
Also, if you haven't seen it, Lion King 1 1/2 is [1] cuteness and [2] totally Rosencrantz and Gildenstern AreDead A Meerkat and A Warthog. No seriously, Stoppard should sue. Or LOL. OR BOTH AT ONCE.
Also Kronk's New Groove is surprisingly funny, in an odd vignette-y way.
I kind of want Kelley to be 'round so we can watch Enchanted, which I've never seen.
...and I think it's the Scar-Cheetah!Master connection, the somewhat reminiscent of each other hair (inc. a beard...on a lion. And I SWEAR Scar is like, rubbing up against a tree that's exuding sap or something b/c that mane? Is gelled.), the cackling, the weird cat-like leering and the domination plots that makes me see it, tbh.
*EDIT* Also it's the Ainley-levels of pure camp in Scar's delivery of "sensational news!"
*Edit x2* Something to quote in case of Sycorax invasion (btw, the whole awkwardly translating "Sycorax rocks. In the modern sense, 'they rock.' " line is amazing and I love it to death.). Also: Is Rafiki in some ways Yorick? Though fulfilling more of a wise fool role like Feste in Twelfth Night, going beyond simply being 'a fellow of infinite jest'? Even as Zazu is obviously Polonious? I think Nala may be a fusion Ophelia and Horatio.
This is probably Too Much Thought About The Lion King.

Date: 2008-07-24 08:21 am (UTC)SCAR = THE MASTER
Now I know why newly regenerated Ten knew The Lion King thoroughly enough to accidentally quote bits of it.
Thick as you are, pay attention.
I can just hear the Master saying something like that.
I need to rewatch the Lion King with this in my head. I haven't seen it for years.

Date: 2008-07-24 12:59 pm (UTC)...Circle of Life-wise, Stewart played Claudius to Jacobi *points to icon*, just like he's doing now for Tennant. (I found the fact that Stewart rehearses in a pinstriped suit kind of amusing... I guess somebody's really into Method, ni?)

Date: 2008-07-24 03:40 pm (UTC)Yeah, but he fucks up in the end and over-hunts and everyone runs out of food and is like 'Thanks, Scar,' so perhaps it still holds. Also Scar's goal is more modest, and we know from Survival that Ainley!Master ROCKS at 'dominating a small herd of predatory cats'--that he can do.
2) I'm apparently off to see Enchanted tonight! Also, omg your shoes adventure sounds adventurous! The kind of posh place that makes you ring first? Scare-awesome.

Yeah me neither, I kind of want an honest Disney marathon now, like the lame Total Girl I soooo am.

Date: 2008-07-24 03:52 pm (UTC)Oh I've see that version! And made many jokes about how they're stuck in a Dalek Detention Camp for high end political prisoners during the war, and this is them doing Community Theater to pass the time. And naturally Master insisted on being Hamlet, and Romana thinks this is all a bit dubious but dislikes being worse than him at any activity and so is giving her all... that might actually be a cute ficlet.
And that's weird! Stewart as Rite of Passage.
And maybe it's ye olde Star Trek geek in my heart, but I have suddenly come to the conclussion that Patric Stewart would be a good Doctor. I so want old man Doctors back. Fewer Astrid-incidents.

Date: 2008-07-24 04:08 pm (UTC)Jeremy and Glenn Close as Claus and Happy von Bulow (an Auersperg princess) -- RL East Coast society types; he offed her w/ an overdose of insulin (she was diabetic) for the $ in 1982, there's a big-ass trial, book's written in 1985, movie's released in 1990.
I was of age for the whole damn thing. *feels really old now*
Yerp, we need to go back to older Doctors who are more apt to call companions "silly youngster" than "dear heart."

Date: 2008-07-24 04:34 pm (UTC)also scar still wins over ainley (though i enjoy your big cat arguement) for holding onto the pride for many years, but then he didn't have a nemesis/reason for failing to conquer so *shrugs* aaaaaand pride rock did recover. meanwhile the whole cheeter planet exploded. so - sorry ainley. to be honest, the master's really really rubbish at all the stuff he does most often. he should just become a scientist and retire or something.
2. hooray for enchanted. at first it seems like it's just kind of fun but disposable and then you realise that the songs have been you in yoru head for the last week and then next time you watch it you love it forever and life is better.
2a. shoes were scary, yes. but great. i felt like i was in the devil wears prada or something. ah yes, i know vivianne westwood's 1996 catalogue like the back of my own hand... yes, yes, i do remember that time when naomi cambell fell over in the shoes, ha ha, how we laughed...
... but i did know who zebedee was. which is something.
"Kings and successions" indeed!
Date: 2008-07-24 05:53 pm (UTC)You know? Scar totally has an Ainley!Master vibe. It's the impossible smirk and look of sneering feline satisfaction, I think. Also Scar's little hair-flip...I have never been able to figure out what it is about the Master that says "slightly effeminate" to me (I think it's different for every Master), but it's there.
Also Lion King = Hamlet needs no defending to me.

I have always thought /exactly/ the same thing! I think
Re: "Kings and successions" indeed!
Date: 2008-07-25 02:43 pm (UTC)At the end of the day, I think it all stems from the Master's feminine approach to breakup!spite. He's got a catty attitude about it that I see far more often in women than men. Which, now that I think of it, is part of the reason I find him both hilarious and frightening, because I've seen the kinds of things a psychobitch can do to her ex.

Great play or greatest play?
And:
http://www.trialofhamlet.com/index.htm . There's a Mary Sue defense attorney. R&G prosecute. For your pleazurez. You have Kelley to 'thank' for this.
FEEL THE ART.
Look, we dunno how long Ainley!Master was there! He--he could have been there ages, TL clothes apparently stay fresh in nearly any conditions! And he might have washed that awk suit thing! And that planet blowing up was a natural phenomenon!
...yes he should totally just be a scientist and I bet the Rani thinks this all the time and headesks that her old friends, who would be super-competent physicists or some shit--are out there fucking around rather than neatly living on Gallifrey in a stable relationship, occasionally offering her free consultation on her cross-discipline projects and Never Fucking Up Her Shit.
2] Enchanted was teh uber-fun. I actually loved characters I did not expect to. And now I want like half those dresses for real.
Maybe?

Date: 2008-07-26 04:56 am (UTC)Yeah, psychobitch ex--it lingered at the back of my mind, but I couldn't really articulate it. But yes, exactly that: with all the venom of one of them who's still emotionally invested in The Ex and self-aware enough to get it. *eyeroll* Counseling. Get some.
