Ahahahahahahaha! I finished KIM! AT LAST!

best_enemies there's the first fic challenge up (It's Academy Era: 'firsts' theme for the first challenge. How synchronetic (I think this is a neologism, but it should be a word, so there you go) is that?) which some of you might enjoy participating in.
Yesterday I learned to silk-screen/make screens, make home-made stickers with a flour-based glue, and make home-made stamps with bike tire rubber and an x-acto knife. It was all really pretty easy! I'd been mystified by screen printing forever-- but let me reassert this claim iff (as the Math-majors are wont to say) producing the screen and made-clothing on my own without help is equally uncomplicated.
But if all goes well: [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] and I are going to make 'Vote Saxon' shirts this weekend, b/c who doesn't need those?
I've embarked on 24 hours of solid reading/paper regurgitation to catch up for my classes. So far 137 pages of TERRIBLE mid 19th century British lit have met my ham-fist of literacy. On to Russia!
This fugue of action will be punctuated by beta-ing, both to mark met goals and b/c my friends' fanfic is so much better than Kipling could ever hope to be. I know I'm behind schedule on both
bagheera_san and
draegonhawke's stuff. Am kind of crap at this.
I really REALLY want to play some chess. I think my opening's gone to crap, kind of The Wrath of Caro Cann style, b/c I haven't played a game in months, let alone done any puzzles/read up on tactics. J/k re: Caro Cann, I was always more a Ruy Lopez/Queen's Gambit/English Opening kind of girl. I should, among the million other things I should do, get back to the point where I can hustle French fuckers in Prague for absinthe for me and friends-- what's life without drugs purloined off gullible, chauvinistic Parisians?
*EDIT* Have workshopped
_coherent b/c her due date was tomorrow and thus her need was greatest. Not in a 'she sucked' way, b/c for time 1000, I <3 Survivalism, but in an 'omfg why is everything ever due?11!!?/' tune that I know only too well. I think the baseline to that song may well be the beat that my heart skipped when College and I first met.

A lot of people, me included, SUCK at endgame/seeing mates before that and are decent tactics players, i.e. great at controlling the board/taking a lot of pieces/establishing a position in the midgame-- so you can totally be an ok chess player w/ out it.
Endgame/checkmate is really predetermined by theory, and you can grok it if you study/do puzzles: it's annoying but learnable w/ outside help like that. And needing outside help for that is standard.
The only way I ever learned how to do it/play at all was by leaching the skills off the captain of a youth national champion team, aka dating him until I didn't always loose (And by 'not always' I mean a scant handful of victories, but against someone with his ranking who started playing that early? That was dandy.).
