I can't think of anything to write for Poetry Workshop. Emily Wilson, the poetess and teacher, required us to squirt out these terible formula poems with restrictions. I give you today's ridiculous example.
Five or more small numbered sections, four to ten lines each.
Organize with
1) a particular object or figure
2) A common theme such as a landscape or portrait
Stay focused and use detail. In the poem, do all of the following:
Use the name of a color.
Use the name of a continent or foreign country.
Include a tool or implement but put it to a different use than its intended one.
Mention a kind of weather disturbance.
Ask a question.
Answer a question.
Each line has 8 syllables
Each line has three accented syllables.
Pay heed to your line breaks, make sure they aren't meerly to satisfy the formal constraint.
All this in the style of the poet Stevens (remember those ways of looking at a blackbird?).
So I think we can all agree that Emily Wilson sucks large, and that this isn't any fun.
I p0wned Jacob in chess today. He was all "You've grown as a player since first we met, Skywalker." Which was kind of "And you get offf where, Charring Cross Station?", or it might have been if I hadn't been basking in the glory of sweet, sweet p0wnage.
In emo news: I feel sometimes like I piss people off by action and inaction so thoroughly that moderation is useless. I sort of want to smack bitches, never speak to bitches again, and move across the continent to be far from bitches in a land where I can know no one. But how necessary is that? I have Jenna and co, Molly E and co, Corry and Frannie and co, Annie and Danny, the Big House, etc. so how much do I need to move across country? I was just... surprised. And it'll be awkward re: Ben, who I don't have any issue with whatsoever. Eh. eeeeeeh. Fuck it, I do want to move to a new place and be a crazy hermit. With many, many cats. I'm supposed to be all alluring today as part five of question mark in the ongoing dance of flirtation, and I feel like comming in in sweatpants (and they'll be goddamn greatful I even came in!).

Date: 2006-04-04 04:50 pm (UTC)I hate constraints on my poetry. I'd do the assignment, then turn in something that totally breaks every single "requirement" on that piece of paper, too.
^_^
Not sure how to respond to the emo news though. Perhaps I haven't been paying enough attention. Sorry about that.
