Reports of Our Deaths Were Greatly Exaggerated

We all had ourselves a shit-flip this morning when the UIowa alert service warned us of what looked to be a potential school shooting. Turns out the incident occurred across town. Apparently the shooter was a bank manager who, after embezzling half a million for cocaine, shot his four elementary aged children and wife before setting fire to himself and his Toyota sienna so he wouldn't have to face a trial?

It is jarring to conceive that our not-so-large city has lost six members; that four children are dead.
I was half-asleep during the initial warnings, and my dream-state kept turning random sounds into gunshots and screams. Is it bad to have thought "It's 8-something in the morning, no one I know will be up or out at this time. good."
The whole thing freaked me out. Being half-asleep didn't help rationality either.
