I was born in the UK and took our dual citizenship with Australia, having lived here since I was six - it was much simpler and more laidback than it seems yours was. It came in handy when we went to the UK/Europe for travelling all over but now I guess with Brexit that's no longer the case.

It's probably a good idea in this day and age for people to get the extra citizenship if they can.
